A settlement has been reached in a federal lawsuit filed by the family of Black man who died after a Florida jail failed to give him his heart medication.

According to News4JAX, Dexter Barry's family is set to receive $300,000 to settle their federal lawsuit over his 2022 death in the Duval County jail.

Barry was arrested in November 2022 after being accused of threatening his neighbor during a dispute about an internet bill. During his detainment, video shows Barry telling police that he had to have his medication.

He died three days after he was released from custody. An autopsy reported stated that he died by cardiac arrest brought on by an autoimmune rejection.

As a result of Barry's death, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office dropped its medical provider, Armor Correctional Health Services. The National Commission on Correctional Health Care determined that Armor's services were deficient. At the time of Barry's death, Armor had recruited volunteers from the Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department to help with low staffing levels.
